Your Heavy-Duty Shop Deserves Better Than Car Software

Overview

Generic automotive software may work for cars, but heavy-duty repair is a different beast. From compliance documentation and preventive maintenance to accurate billing and diesel-savvy support, here’s why commercial repair shops need software built specifically for the way they work. 

We are not in the business of bad-mouthing our competitors.

Really, we’re not. It’s not just because we feel we’re above it; we’ve also just got too much going on to really bother. We have heavy-duty shops to help and coffee to drink. We’re busy, dude.

But every now and then the following question pops up: Why should I look at Fullbay? I’m very happy with the software I have. And then the software turns out to be something built for the automotive industry.

We inevitably wince. 

Before we dig into why you should think about choosing or switching to Fullbay to run your heavy-duty repair shop, let’s acknowledge some of the reasons people might choose other platforms. Some of them do indeed have a lot going for them, like gorgeous modern layouts, mobile apps, and a snazzy invoicing module. 

Hey, those are nice features. We can acknowledge that. We can also acknowledge that some of these tools are really, really useful to smaller shops just starting out. Hey, sometimes even car software is better than nothing. 

But…

Automotive software ain’t built for heavy-duty. And yes, that makes a huge difference. 

Truck Repair Is Not Automotive Repair  

Over the years, we’ve talked to a lot of shop owners who are either choosing Fullbay over other platforms, or switching to it after trying competitors. That means we’ve gotten a lot of feedback about what folks like about these other platforms…and where they tend to fall short. 

Time and again, we hear the following:

  • “It’s not really set up for truck garages or equipment as much as it is automotive.”

  • “It’s more…generic.” 

These are all quotes from real shop repair owners. 

Heavy-duty is just more complicated than auto repair. Not just because truck techs are cooler (though, obviously!) but because the work itself is carried out on a different scale. Most passenger vehicles share, at the very least, similar architecture. They also have predictable service intervals. You’ve got different trims and engine options, but the configuration itself is pretty standard.

On the other hand, heavy-duty equipment can include trailer configurations, refrigeration units, additional power units, and power take-off systems. And let’s not even get into the emissions packages, which often vary by state and come with all sorts of frequently changing regulations. Heavy-duty equipment also takes a hell of a beating over its lifespan, with trucks logging hundreds of thousands of miles. 

Heavy-duty repair is just not automotive repair. Can you jury-rig automotive shop software to run your heavy-duty shop? Yeah, probably. Is that the best idea? Probably not.

Look For Software That Provides The Necessary Documentation 

The heavy-duty industry is extremely regulated, and anyone fixing units needs to stay in line with both federal and state laws. This is an area where even a good automotive shop platform tends to fall short; everyday passenger cars, for the most part, just do not have to meet the kind of standards the average big rig does.

All of those items (and more) need to be inspected, maintained, and documented for the safety and legal protection of both the customer and the shop. That means inspection forms need to be filled out and stored properly, and tied to individual units instead of just the customer. They need to be easy to read and easy to retrieve. 

Is automotive software really ready for all that? Honestly, no. The average family sedan — or let’s say a pickup truck used for work, if we want to be generous — just isn’t going to need that level of documentation, and even the best automotive shop software isn’t going to provide it.

  • Multiple interval types. PMs may trigger on mileage, engine hours, or idle time (oh my!) — or a combination of the three. 
  • Layered service schedules. A truck might have multiple services due, each with its own scope and required parts.
  • Fleet-level coordination. Fleets need units cycled in and out without disrupting routes or revenue.

And let’s not forget that the average heavy-duty parts are larger and more expensive than anything you’re going to put on a regular passenger vehicle, and lots of them contribute to whether the unit meets regulations and can pass inspections. 

The average automobile software — heck, even really good automobile software — isn’t geared for that.

They’re also quite useful in setting up standard processes for shops, along with being used as training tools.
