Diesel Technician Efficiency

Diesel Technician Efficiency

Diesel technician efficiency is a major concern for heavy duty shop owners. Most shops in the country pay their techs hourly. Paying hourly means there is no direct connection between the amount of money a technician makes and the amount the shop makes. In fact, if techs aren’t working efficiently, the more they make, the less the shop makes.

How Shop Owners Can Increase Diesel Technician Efficiency

Read our cornerstone article here to learn how shop owners can increase diesel technician efficiency in their shop. It explains how there are three types of technicians out there: struggling, good, and great. There are three levers you can pull as a heavy duty shop owner. You can create an environment that fosters great, efficient technicians. Apply the principles in your shop to increase efficiency.

The Impact of Software on Diesel Technician Efficiency

A critical part of boosting efficiency is getting the right software in your shop. Don’t use software built for light duty shops. It may be cheaper (or may not), but it will cost you much, much more in the long run. It will drag your efficiency down. It is truly forcing a square peg in a round hole. Like any situation where you use the wrong tool for the job, you may get the result in the end but you sacrifice a lot along the way.

Also, don’t get stuck with software that still requires you to print work orders and hand-write information. You want your technicians turning wrenches, not fiddling with 20-year-old shop management software. Implement a tool that is not only built for heavy duty shops, but leverages current technology.

We built Fullbay in our own diesel repair shop. We built it because we couldn’t find anything on the market that met our needs. Take a look. See if it might make sense for your shop.
